Natural Electrolyte Sports Drink Alternative Recipe2 min read

Electrolytes are important to our bodies processes and must be replaced when lost. The following is some ideas for an electrolyte drink that may serve to replenish electrolyte losses. Regular store-bought sports drinks can have lots of sugar, added flavours and colours. So here is a more natural alternative.

Electrolyte drink

  • ½ a lemon, freshly juice
  • ½ – 1 orange, freshly juice
  • 2 cups of filtered water or coconut water
  • 1 pinch of Himalayan sea salt
  • 1 tsp of coconut sugar
  • Method

  • Put 1 tbsp of boiled water in a cup and set aside
  • Juice lemon and orange and put into blender or mason jar
  • Add 2 cups of water
  • Add coconut sugar and sald to the cup with boiled water and stir till dissolved
  • Add coconut sugar water to the blender or jar
  • Blend or shake and drink 🙂
  • Tips:

  • You could use either a blender or a mason jar (shake till blended) for this recipe
  • If using coconut water, still use the boiled water method for dissolving the coconut sugar and salt
  • Substitute a cup of ice for a cup of water. Add the ice when blending non-juiced fruits. This helps to break down the fibres in the fruit when blending. Making it smoother at the end
  • I ended up using a full orange, lemon and lime in the mix pictured above. I wanted the extra extra vitamin C as I had a cold
  • You can play around with different bases and flavours using the following:

    Bases:

  • Water (filtered if you have access to it)
  • Coconut water
  • Pick your favourite herbal tea:
  • Green tea
  • Chamomile tea
  • Lemon balm tea
  • Peppermint tea
  • All 2 cups of fluid

    Choose a fruit:

  • watermelon, blended
  • blueberries, blended
  • strawberries, blended
  • raspberries, blended
  • pineapple, blended
  • mango, blended
  • ½ a lime, freshly juice
  • ½ a lemon, freshly juice
  • (all 1 cup unless otherwise stated)

    The possibilities are endless. I would love to hear if you have any other flavours to add to this list.

    Sweeteners:

  • coconut sugar
  • honey or
  • maple syrup
  • Don’t forget that fruit is already sweet so only use a little to taste. These sweetners were used for the minerals that are in them.

    For taste add some crushed leaves of mint, lemon balm or spearmint.
